Hitherto it has not filled the trump of fame hereafter when the --Wall street 1 ... ... . - Jl urars oi it it win fanaa rrt J-chillar to creep up and down their -dor sal vertebrae. Other people may for get Jobes, but the Wall street gang never! He has Jaught them a lesson which must have jarred their' "innards" amazingly. 'Jobes is a Kansas City banker, therefore a Missoorian. . 1 feel proud of Jobes, though I haven't. the pleasure of his acquaintance, and I ex tend to him the assurance of my pro found consideration. Jobes. needed in his banking business on the Kaw $100, 000. worth of the new Philippine bonds and wasted only that amount. He communicated his modest desire to thei Waw street magnates, and they simply -laughed at him. So Jobes set his think er to working, with the net result that he gobbled the entire issue of $3,000, 000 of bonds by the simple process of bidding a little higher than the low bids which the WalU street -Combine had agreed to make and afterward di vide the spoils. If he had taken a maul and hit them between the eyes with it the surprise would have been no great er. It turns oat that these Wall street Financiers (always spelled with a big F) actually need $2,900,000 of those bonds xor they .will have to go out of the banking busiSess; consequently they have to pay Mr. Jobes his own price for the bonds they are. compelled to have. Jobes will probably mark them up sky high, and if he doesn't he is not the man I take him for. New Yorkers are proverbially provincial. Those Wall, street magnateg probably think Kansas City is still an Indian trading post Jobes is neither an ocu list nor a dentist, but he surely caused those fellows to open their eyes, and ne cut tneir wisdom teeth for them. Hats off to Mr. Jobes, for he deserves well of the public! Hungry For Information. The Republican congressmen are de cidedly hungry for information touch ing the trusts. They introduce all sorts of resolutions asking for informa tion which every reasonably well in formed man in the United States al ready has, hoping thereby to deceive the people. Kot long ago Mr. Martin of South Dakota introduced a resolu tion wKh a great flourish of trumpets calling on the attorney general to in vestigate and find out if there is such a thing in the United States as a beef trust He might just as well have in troduced a resolution to inquire as to whether the sun rises and sets or as to whether the moon shines by its own or by reflected light Mr. Attorney General Knox may report on that reso lution some time this side of the judg ment day and he may -postpone it to a later period. He has himself said that the administration does not intend to "run amuck" on the trusts, and lie should know the mind of tfye admin istration if any one does. Next among these hungry for infor mation Republicans is Senators-Jonathan- P. Dolliver of Iowa. The other day he introduced a resolution direct ing the secretary of commerce ' and labor to send to the senate a statement showing what companies have been incorporated and what Investments of capital made by individuals or cor porations since 1900, independent of the "so called trusts," and the aggre gate capital and total capitalization of the trusts. The resolution was ordered to lie on the table. ' And now comes Mr. Tawney of Min nesota with a resolution to investigate the question of whether there ia a to bacco trust! He might have gone further and asked the secretary of commerce to inquire if there are not two tobacco trus'tsaifci if they are not named the "American" and the "Con tinental," and if they haven't, like-the Roman triumvirs, divided the world between them. But why ask, the secre tary of commerce and labor when the gamin smoking a cigarette on the cor ner of the alley could tell him? It is a gigantic bluff at being opposed to trusts, this caper of inquiringif this, that and the other thing is true. It will not deceive any one. If these Re publican leaders., were really anxious for some cold facts as to the existence of these various trusts, let-them con suit the ledger of the Republican na tional campaign committee and read the names of the multitude of trusts which are there credited with hand some contributions to the Republican campaign fund in 1900, and. whch contributions were made for the pur pose of maintaining .in- power, a party whicli it- was thoroughly- understood would rive the trusts do deadlier blow than a dignified resolution "directing the secretary of this, that or the other h department to inquire"-to politely in quire, o coarse, not rudely, but gen- tly-and to inquire particularly of the trusts themselves rather than of the sandbagged public. William S. Cowherd. - ' k The congressional campaign commit tee has done a very wise thins in I afXfft aa ltB chairman the Hon. We ought to be able to pick op two or tnree congressmen in Kansas thia tim In each of two districta the Republic ans nominated two candidate for cot, gress, and in both cases tb faction have appealed to the court to declare which is the true nomine. After th courts decide In all probability the dis appointed factions will bolt; If not openly, they are pretty certain to knife the nominee. Then the Burton scandal and the animosities growing oat of It ought to materially help the" Democrats in the Sunflower State. Aa Mr. Chair man Cowherd is next door nelxhbor to Karisas, he Is in position to take ad vantage of all the dlsgruntlenwtua in tnat state. All good Democrat will wisn nun a nearty godspeed In hla undertaking. Off Its Baae. The esteemed Yellow Jacket of Mo- L ravian Falls, N. c., a rampant stand patter, rises to remark as follows: If Governor Cummin of Iowa la for fra trade, why doesn't he run for president cm the Democratic Ucket? This would aup ply a lonj felt want In the Democratic party and be a great relief to th Repub lican party as weU. In the foregoing "paragraph the es teemed Y. J. Is decidedly off Its bje. In the first place, while it is none of my business to defend Governor Cum mins from the assault of bis fellow Republicans, it Is none the less true that Jie is not a free trader, to Jodt from his public utterance, which are all I have to Judge by. His position as he declares It ia that be la In favor of cutting down those tariff rate Which are so hig-b that they have bo come a shelter for monopoly. v Now. the average Republican will say that he is in favor of exactly th same thing. Perhaps the editor of the Yellow Jacket would say the same thing If catechised in general terms. The trouble is, wben yon ask them to cot down some particular tariff schedule tney take to the. woods. If Cummin is a Democrat, as the Yellow Jacket insinuates, perhaps It will have the kindness to answer two ""auvtlo&a which no other Republican baa had the courage to answer and which would elucidate a great mystery. These questions are, first why did the Republicans re-elect Cummins by a big majority in 1903 after he had been ex ploiting his idea for two year or more? Second, how doe It happen that he is going to th Republican national convention at the bead of th Iowa delegation? As all the low Re publican statesmen are trader footed about answering these question, the Y. J. man can endear himself to all seekers after reformation by tell ing the truth, the who! truth and nothing but the truth on these q mo tions, which have gretly perplexed ,great many men outside of the liawk eye State. Inatructiv. The banking house of Henry Clew & Co., In It .last letter to It patron and those desired a patron a,' airr forth the following paragraph, which ought to be very Instructive to peopl who, having eye, see, and, baring ears, hear what ought to concern thatn: Renewal of litigation- brtwaaa ldr of the merger stocks brought th upward movement to a sudden halt Inductn more or less realising and tempting freh sales on short ' account. It 1 poawlbl that such litigation may b Brolongvd In definitely and b accompanied with a con siderable allowing of hoaUlity. O th other hand, tt ahould hot b . forgotten that these railroad magnate ar imply maneuvering for poalUon and that aa anon as the struggle betwn them reach a point where th ultimate right and in terests of each have been determined thv are likely to come to son sort of aa understanding. But the latter eours sta hstrdly probable In view of recent axprrWtvc. and the chance ar that all In port anl dlffereneewlll be adjusted by th courta such being Ah only rational way out of th dilemma. If one of ordinary intelllgmc will read between the line of that pr graph he will not hare great difficulty in arriving at the conclusion that th Wall street fight over those 4 railroad stocks la largely bogus, merely a con trivance whereby to shear thl spring' crop of lambs.
